La Bodega Negra – London W1D

From its Sex Shop entrance to its on-the-money Mexican menu, this basement haunt is undeniably in vogue.
Despite knowing full well what to expect, it still feels a bit naughty, walking through the doorway of what, for all intents and purposes, looks like a strip club. Yet as soon as you step inside, past the neon lit silhouettes of dancing ladies, nerves evaporate and intrigue takes over.
La Bodega Negra is dark, seductive and incredibly cool, with a cavern-like feel which plays into the pretence that this is London’s best kept secret (that just about everyone knows about). The Mexican menu delivers, with colourful collaborations of tangy tastes and hits of chilli throughout. The ‘Scallop, Mango & Jalapeno Ceviche’ (£13) is fantastic whilst the ‘Grilled Corn, Crema Mexicana, Fresh Herbs’ (£5) are messy to eat but well worth the effort! Tacos are served in pairs (£6.5-8.5) so it’s worth ordering a few; the ‘Char roasted mushroom, cream mexicana’ (£6.5) I remember being particularly popular.
Through the kindness of strangers (the drunk gentlemen sitting adjacent to my party), I sampled the ‘Slow roasted lamb barbaco, sala borracha (2 persons)’ (£39) – the soft meat literally melted in the mouth and I instantly regretted my hesitancy in ordering the relatively pricey dish.
La Bodega Negra is a great option for dinner with friends not least due to electric atmosphere of excitement that consumes the entire venue. If you aren’t able to get a reservation, you can dine in the walk-in café upstairs, which serves a selection of dishes from the dining room menu. It’s a good back up option, but really you’ll be missing out. My advice, tell your friends, book ahead, and look forward to a really fun evening in La Bodega Negra.
